Varicose veins typically happen when your veins become enlarged, dilated, and overfilled with blood. Your veins have a one-way valve that prevents blood from flowing backwards however sometimes that valve fails, so the blood builds up in the vein – giving the vein its bluish-purple or red colour. It is extremely common, especially in women, and can appear all over the body, although it is most common to appear on the legs as these veins are furthest away from the heart and gravity makes it more difficult for the blood to flow upwards towards the heart.
